Kerala, often referred to as "God's Own Country," is a state located on the southwestern coast of India.

History

1 Ancient Period- Kerala has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It was mentioned in ancient texts like the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. The region was home to various dynasties such as the Cheras, Cholas, and Pandyas.

2 Medieval Period- Kerala had significant trade relations with the Greeks, Romans, and Arabs. The region also witnessed the arrival of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism during this period.

3 Colonial Period- Kerala became a prominent center for spice trade, attracting European powers like the Portuguese, Dutch, and British.

Geography of Kerala

1Location- Kerala is situated on the Malabar Coast of southwestern India, bordered by the Arabian Sea on the west and the Western Ghats on the east.

2Topography- The state is characterized by its diverse geographical features including beaches, backwaters, mountains, and dense forests.

3 Climate- Kerala has a tropical climate with relatively high humidity and abundant rainfall. It experiences three main seasons – summer, monsoon, and winter.

Kerala Festivals

Onam

Onam is the most important festival in Kerala, celebrated in honor of King Mahabali, who is believed to visit Kerala during this time.

Vishu

Vishu marks the Malayalam New Year and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. It is observed with rituals like Vishukkani, where auspicious items are arranged in front of deities, and Vishukkaineetam, where elders give money to younger ones as a token of good luck.

Thrissur

Thrissur Pooram is one of the most spectacular temple festivals in Kerala, held annually at the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur. It features colorful processions of caparisoned elephants, traditional music, and fireworks. The highlight is the competition between two groups representing the neighboring temples of Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi.

Attukal Pongala

Attukal Pongala is a unique festival celebrated at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, where millions of women gather to prepare a special offering called Pongala in earthen pots.

Makaravilakku at Sabarimala

Makaravilakku is an annual pilgrimage and festival celebrated at the Sabarimala Temple in Pathanamthitta district. It marks the sighting of the celestial star Makara Jyothi and attracts millions of devotees, especially those following the Ayyappa tradition.

5 Kerala Parotta with Chicken Curry- Kerala Parotta is a flaky, layered flatbread made from maida (all-purpose flour) and is best enjoyed with a spicy and flavorful chicken curry cooked with onions, tomatoes, and a variety of spices.
